He hasn't been nominated for a Grammy, his name hasn't turned up on any of the best-selling charts but Mark Beshara recently qualified for a Recording Industry Association of America Gold Album award with an unusual recording called "Astral Sounds - a Natural High ". Beshara describes Astral Sounds as "an hour of electronic noises that provide structural exercises for the mind." Recorded entirely on synthesizers at the Mag-Tech Studios in Los Angles, Astral Sounds was designed by Beshara as a tool for lectures in behavior modification. Auditors attending his lectures listened to the takes in order to achieve the so-called "alpha state" of deep relaxation. Soon, Beshara recalls, "everyone wanted the recording." According to Beshara, Astral Sounds has been tested by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agencys Bio-Acoustical Laboratory and by the U.S. Army School of Behavioral Science. Astral Sounds begins with a rushing steady beat which sounds somewhat like a rhythm machine or rapidly moving railroad train. After five minutes the beat segues into the Astral Sounds. Other customers include the U.S. Army School of Behavior Sciences, the Hong Kong Prisons Department and the Kansas Department of Mental Health. Paul Grein, music research editor at Billboard - the music industry's trade magazine - called Beshara's success "amazing." "Whos ever heard of Astral Sounds?" he asked. "I though it was some kind of mistake when I first saw it listed as a Gold Album. " Grein said that only 75 to 100 albums a year are labeled gold, noting, "It is a real achievement.
